Building a new bed is a challenge that many woodworkers are happy to take on. I always find it more gratifying to build a large project. I am not sure why, perhaps it is the time required or the fact that a large project consumes so much time. Once finished I feel much better then after completing a smaller, simpler project.

Regardless of what style you choose for a bed there are some key points to look for when choosing the wood plans.

Remember that a set of bed plans is your instructions for building a bed. Just like when you go to Ikea and buy a piece of furniture the instructions should provide all the steps and information you need to complete the project properly.

With that in mind, what should you look for in a set of plans?

• The plans should have enough views to show all the details of the project
• All the measurements have to be properly labeled. It doesn’t do any good having to guess.
• A materials list is essential when taking on a large project like a bed. There is nothing more frustrating then having to stop working and run back to the hardware store to get more material.
• A cutting list is also a key item when buying bed plans or any other wood plans. A cutting list gives you the dimensions of all the pieces you will need to cut. This can save you from making costly errors.
• Hardware list are also needed for completing more difficult projects.

Finding free bed plans that are going to have all five of the components listed above is difficult. I have found that whenever i get a free set of plans there is information missing that not only costs me a bunch of time to figure out but can also cost money in wasted material.
